Section 4: Matching Music to the Patient's Needs
Actively Dying Patients
Music for a patient who is actively dying may be used as transition support.
This approach uses improvisation and may be arrhythmic.
The practitioner should remain attentive to the patient and respond to what is happening in the moment.
Key idea:
Actively dying → Transition support → Improvisation / arrhythmic music
Transitioning music is typically improvised and contains the following characteristics:
Free improvisation
No fixed meter
Long sustained tones
Sparse melodic phrases
Extended pauses
Responding to the patient's breathing
Gradually changing musical texture

*Listen for how the music responds to the patient rather than imposing a fixed rhythm or structure. Improvisation may be arrhythmic, with pauses and changes that follow the patient's breathing and condition.
